Reading food labels 101

Reading food labels can be a satisfying experience! Every now and again, I come across an item that has no questionable additives or chemicals in it and I give a quiet hip hooray.

Food manufacturers are changing their approach to food technology as we, as consumers, raise our voices about what we can and can’t accept.

Last week my partner arrived home proudly displaying a box for a new type of instant noodle. He had assessed the label (yes label reading is catching in a household!) and was proud to proclaim that it had none of the nasties in it we choose to avoid as a family. (I must confess I too was happy such a prepackaged product exists but elated he’d actually checked!)

But there was a lesson to be learnt later in the week when he purchased a different flavor variety of the same item. Assuming the ‘good label read’ would extend across the flavour variations proved to be a literal ‘pain in the belly’ for him. Although the base product was similar, the sauce sachet had 3 questionable food colours, MSG and several other additives.

Label reading can reveal there is a better option.
