‘Scorecard’ reveals the truth about toxic loads
Have you notices that some entries in The Chemical Maze list potential effects with the term ‘Scorecard’ after them (see formaldehyde for an example)? Scorecard spotlights the top polluters in the US and ranks states and countries by pollutant releases. You can visit their website and access a range of information such as:
‘Over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released by industry into the nation’s environment each year, including 72 million pounds of recognized carcinogens.’
Scorecard provides detailed reports on chemicals being released from any of 20,000 industrial facilities, or a summary report for any area in the country.
Whilst Scorecard references the US only, there is a lesson for all of us to consider. How is the country you live in handling these kinds of issues? Do we just assume that our health interests are considered by rule makers and manufacturers, or do we need a greater say in how environmental pollutants are dispersed? Knowledge is the only way to make truly informed choices.
